(1) The driver of a motor vehicle fitted with a spotlight or searchlight must not operate the light, or allow it to be operated, on a road unless—
(a) the vehicle is stationary, the light is operated only for examining or making adjustments or repairs to a vehicle, and light from it is not projected further than 6m; or
(b) the light is operated for the temporary purpose of reading or looking for a notice, sign, house number or something similar; or
(c) the vehicle is a police vehicle; or
(d) the vehicle is being used by the Territory, the Commonwealth or any public authority.
Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units.
(2) The driver of a motor vehicle fitted with an additional headlight permitted to be fitted under the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2000
, schedule 1 (Light vehicle standards) must not operate the headlight, or allow it to be operated, if—
(a) the vehicle is being driven on a length of road in a built-up area; or
(b) the driver is driving less than—
(i) 200m behind a vehicle travelling in the same direction as the driver; or
(ii) 200m from an oncoming vehicle.
Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units.
